A preview of the January 4, 2013,
edition of The Carmel Pine Cone

January 4 - 10, 2013

Dear Readers,

The 50 Big Sur residents stranded by a rock slide last week are still stranded but have come up with some inventive, off-road methods for getting food and to their jobs. Chris Counts has the latest details.

A San Francisco Bay Area man has been arrested for trying to murder his wife in their room at the Highlands Inn. Mary Schley has that one.

One of the most important undeveloped lots in Pebble Beach has been preserved as open space, thanks to more than $4 million from "anonymous donors." I have that byline.

Another group of foolish hikers had to be rescued from the snowy Santa Lucia mountains last weekend. You won't believe how lost they were. Chris Counts has that one, too.

The former bank building downtown that was almost torn down and turned into condos and shops is now headed for a new life as an event center. The city council will consider what to do about Flanders Mansion Tuesday, and also whether to require permits for beach fires. Remember the days when Clint Eastwood was trying to rein in Dave Maradei? We have a feature about them. Joe Livernois writes the definitive history of one of Carmel's epic controversies. And my editorial asks why the government -- at all levels -- is so dumb.
