A preview of the May 17, 2013, edition

May 17 - 23, 2013

Dear Readers,

A former top official at Facebook and his girlfriend are planning to get married in Big Sur next month, and while he's pulling out all the stops for the multi-million-dollar affair, he apparently overlooked one small requirement: a coastal permit for all the construction he's doing. Will the wedding have to be put off? Chris Counts reports.

Mayor Jason Burnett says there may be a solution to the desal plant's possible interference with snowy plover nesting grounds, and that is to locate the plant's wells at a sand mine instead of on the beach. Kelly Nix has that one.

A charity that helps pay for expensive veterinary surgery for injured pets has come to the rescue of a dog that broke one front leg and seriously damaged the other in a fall in Carmel Valley. Kelly has that story, too.

Palo Colorado residents are facing dire fire danger, and a fire official is warning them to be prepared for the worst. The management of Sunset Center is in doubt because of complaints about the way it's being run now. We have a special section that focuses on everybody's favorite subject -- their health. And my editorial calls for re-evaluation of the penalty for DUI, especially if the threshold is to be lowered.
