Dear Readers,
Big Sur was hit with another major wildfire late Sunday
night. This one burned at least 12 homes and left dozens
of residents grateful to escape with their lives. Chris
Counts has their dramatic stories.
One of Monterey County's most respected politicians
announced he would not seek re-election, even as a
likely successor stepped forward. Kelly Nix has that
one.
Yet another claim alleging illegal discrimination
against a longtime municipal employee was filed against
Carmel this week. Mary Schley reports.
The man prosecutors say was responsible for the deaths
of two women on a Pebble Beach street last April has
been sued by his victim's families. Only two challengers
have said they'll run for city council against
incumbents in April. Beloved actress Joan Fontaine died
at her Carmel Highlands home Sunday, while artist George
Rodrigue, of "Blue Dog" fame, also died this week. We
have extensive obits for both. And my editorial asks
which Jason Stilwell is real: The one lavished with
praise by the city council, or the one almost everybody
else has questions about.
We are very proud of our newspaper, and we sincerely
thank you for supporting it. As always, I am available
