Dear Readers,
The Monterey County Grand Jury is
investigating the way Carmel was run during the Jason
Stilwell era, especially why he fired so many
long-time employees. But the grand jury can't have a
lot of the documents it needs, the city council
decided Tuesday, because of privacy laws protecting
those very employees. Huh? Good question, and Mary
Schley tries to answer it.
A Pacific Grove man faces 15 years in prison after
being convicted Friday for killing two women in an
infamous Pebble Beach DUI crash. Mary has that story,
too.
If you think there are too many tasting rooms in town,
you'll be happy with a decision of the planning
commission this week. Not only shouldn't there be so
many, the commission said, but the ones we have should
only serve local wines. The indefatigable Mary Schley
reports that story, as well.
The water cutback order that threatened to wreak havoc
on the Monterey Peninsula has been delayed, thanks to
an agreement between the state water board and a local
mayors' group. Two wind-whipped wildfires in Big Sur
last week were contained just before they got out of
control. Goats are being used to control weeds at a
land preserve in Carmel Valley. If you love -- or hate
-- the new paid parking program on Ocean Avenue, a
public meeting next week will be your chance to sound
off. The AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am got
underway Thursday under gloriously sunny skies, and
with an equally sunny forecast for the weekend. We
have a colorful special section to help you follow all
the action. And my editorial calls the for the state
legislature to solve a problem it obviously needs to,
but just as obviously won't.
