A preview of the December 18, 2015,
edition of The Carmel Pine Cone

Dec. 18 - 24, 2015

Dear Readers,

The city council's ban on woods fires was upheld by the coastal commission Friday, which means a 100-plus-year-old Carmel tradition is about to go up in smoke. But how will the plan for community propane fires be implemented? Kelly Nix has the story. And if you're wondering how the local air pollution control district ended up being a major player in the effort to eliminate wood fires on Carmel Beach, Mary Schley has that angle.

Speaking of the beach, a landmark mansion at the north end was sold this week for a record-breaking price for Carmel real estate. Mary Schley has that story, as well.

Cal Am took another big step forward to solving our water shortage by selecting contractors to build extensive new pipelines to bring water from a desal plant in Marina to the Peninsula. Kelly Nix reports that one.

A local congressional candidate with extensive national security experience is weighing in with what she says is the best way to protect the country from terrorists. In an unusual twist, the Big Sur Land Trust is selling a piece of property it believes should be developed. A county official says it will wait until an emergency is at hand to remove another stretch of levee along the Carmel River. Smash and grabs are up this year, just like they are every holiday season. The woman who stole a large Santa from a Carmel Valley business has been identified, thanks to a security camera that caught an image of her as she made off with her loot. And my editorial takes a look at the progress -- or lack thereof -- that's been made toward solving our water shortage, and the way water is dealt with when there's too much of it.
As always, I am available to respond to questions, comments or concerns, and to offer advice about how best to read our newspaper on your computer, smartphone or iPad.
