Dear Readers,

The two biggest highway failures after this winter's storms -- Cachagua Road in Carmel Valley and Highway 1 at Pfeiffer Canyon in Big Sur -- are getting started on the route to recovery. But more testing is needed before it can even be figured out how to fix Cachagua Road, and the old bridge at Pfeiffer Canyon hasn't exactly been cooperating with a three-ton wrecking ball's efforts to move it out of the way. Mary Schley and Chris Counts have our stories.

Meanwhile, the flipside of the storm damage is that our water storage for the upcoming dry season is at record levels. Kelly Nix reports that one.

Even as the Carmel City Council set some parameters for hiring a new assistant city administrator, another important position at city hall has become vacant. Mary Schley has that one, too.

Over at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the fish must be having a hard time not getting inflated egos, considering all the fan mail they've been receiving. Elaine Hesser has the details.

A city commission is trying to decide whether movies and live music are appropriate for city parks. School kids are asking the city council to ban all plastic disposables in town. Mundaka restaurant will soon be no more. And, while Carmel is practically perfect now, my editorial offers a whole bunch of suggestions of ways for it to be even better.
