A preview of the February 15, 2019,
edition of The Carmel Pine Cone

February 15 - 21, 2019

Dear Readers,

This week’s big storms left behind a lot of damage to houses, cars and power lines. Are more downpours on the way? Chris Counts has our report.

Speaking of storm damage, the city’s public works director has been put on leave for sending an email that wasn’t exactly what you’d call diplomatic. Mary Schley has that one.

The Green New Deal proposed this week may have been met with plenty of derision, but Congressman Jimmy Panetta is co-sponsoring it. Kelly Nix reports.

The chamber of commerce is asking Carmel’s businesses to help lobby for changes to the sidewalk vendor law. Sunday’s final round of the AT&T Pro-Am was delayed by a freak hailstorm that turned Pebble Beach into an icy wonderland (for a few minutes). Caltrans says one of the Highway 1 bridges in Big Sur has to be replaced. Despite the rainy weather, a wildfire safety meeting drew a big crowd to Palo Corona Park. A longtime soloist at the Carmel Bach Festival is being mourned as a "magnet, a mentor and a gatherer of forces that brought every performance together.” Two raptors suffering from lead poisoning have been treated by the SPCA, including one that's recovered enough to be released back into the wild. The Stevenson and CHS basketball teams are heading into the postseason with great expectations. And my editorial says that tree-protection ordinances definitely go too far if they force you to let a big pine fall on your living room.
