Dear Readers,
The national debate over monuments and historic symbols
really hit home this week as statues of Carmel Mission
founder Junipero Serra were removed from a park and a
busy intersection in town, and a petition was circulated
calling for Carmel High School to get rid of its
“Padres” mascot. Mary Schley reports.
An infectious disease expert at CHOMP is warning that
coronavirus is still very much active on the Monterey
Peninsula and urging everyone not to become complacent
about social distancing. Mary Schley has that one, too.
After years of grappling with over-tourism, the people
of Big Sur are working on a plan to get it under
control, including banning parking at the north end of
the Bixby Bridge. Chris Counts has that story.
Two young surfers are being credited with saving the
life of a swimmer who was about to drown. The owner of a
large property near Carmel Beach wants to remove another
stand of large eucalyptus trees, but will the city let
her? A motorcyclist was killed Saturday on Carmel Valley
Road — apparently when a car pulled out in front of him.
City number crunchers are coming up with a variety of
ways to cope with upcoming revenue shortfalls, but
should curtailing ambulance service be one of them? Some
parents are practically begging the school district to
reopen schools this fall, and some of them are even
protesting about it. The new layout for Peter Hay golf
course in Pebble Beach has been unveiled. A veteran
developer says he is all set to go with a badly needed
upgrade in downtown Pacific Grove. Local libraries have
come up with some very creative strategies for coping
with being closed for so long. Water use on the Monterey
Peninsula was surprisingly low in April but went up in
May. Dennis Taylor has the story of a would-be MLB
player whose life has taken some amazing turns. Neal
Hotelling continues with the saga of the dairy that
played a vital role for decades in Carmel’s daily life.
We have a special section for you, “Healthy Lifestyles,”
with tips for maintaining your personal health at a time
when it’s never been more important. And my editorial
says tearing down statues of historic figures from the
past just makes the people of today look dumb.
